Entrepreneur visa in Spain: an opportunity for international innovators

Spain has established itself as an attractive destination for entrepreneurs and innovators from all over the world thanks to its entrepreneur visa. This type of visa is designed to attract international talent, encourage entrepreneurship and boost the local economy. Here are the key aspects of this visa that might be of interest to you if you are thinking of launching your business project in Spain.

The Entrepreneur Visa in Spain is a residence permit that allows non-EU citizens to reside and develop their business activity in the country. This visa is part of Law 14/2013, of 27 September, to support entrepreneurs and their internationalisation, better known as the Entrepreneurs Law, with the aim of attracting foreign investment and qualified talent.

Entrepreneur visa requirements

The most important requirement to obtain this visa is to present an innovative business project that adds value to the Spanish economy. This project must be well-structured and demonstrate its potential for growth, job creation and ability to attract investment.

A detailed business plan is essential. This document should include:

  •         Description of the project
  •         Market analysis
  •         Business strategy
  •         Profile of the entrepreneurial team
  •         Financial projection

The business plan must demonstrate that the project is viable and sustainable in the long term.

The business project will be evaluated by the Directorate General for International Trade and Investment (DGCOMINVER), which will assess its innovative nature and economic impact. The applicant must accredit their academic training and professional experience relevant to the development of the business project.

It is important to demonstrate that they have the necessary skills and knowledge to carry out the business successfully. In addition, it is essential to prove that sufficient financial resources are available for the start-up and maintenance of the business. This includes own funds and/or external financing. The applicant must have public or private health insurance with coverage in Spain. It is also necessary to present a criminal record certificate from the country or countries in which the applicant has resided for the last five years.

The first step in the application process is to prepare all the necessary documentation, including the business plan, the entrepreneur’s curriculum vitae, proof of financial resources, medical insurance and a criminal record certificate.

The application is submitted to the Spanish Consular Office in the applicant’s country of origin or residence. This process can take up to 10 working days from the complete submission of the documentation.

Once the project has been approved, the corresponding Immigration Office will issue a resolution on the visa application. If the application is approved, a residence visa will be granted for one year, renewable for as long as the business project is ongoing and complies with the established requirements.
